Speed Rail

A speed rail is the row of most-poured bottles mounted at the bartender's build position. It is the single highest-frequency tool in a bar, reached for 50 to 150 times an hour. Here is how to size and place one, and how Kobayashi integrates a 7 to 12-bottle speed rail into every station.

A speed rail (also called a speed well or spirit rail) is a stainless steel trough mounted at the front of the underbar that holds the bartender's most-poured bottles within arm's reach, so well drinks build without turning or stepping. Standard capacity is 7 to 12 bottles.

Behind every fast bartender is a well-organized speed rail. It holds the house pours, vodka, gin, rum, tequila, whiskey, triple sec, and the high-volume mixers, in the exact order the bartender's hand expects them. A drink that would take a turn-and-reach to the back bar instead builds in one motion.
